Does anyone kow why Guardian's costume was drawn with so much black in the red parts?

I always took it as simply being the color of the Canadian flag. This is just an inker getting giddy with his pen.

I also just saw it as a shadowing technique Byrne was playing with at the time. Kinda like NS and Aurora having black hair, but with white ofset colouring rather than the standard blue.
