History

The Plodex race was dedicated to the art of war. It was said by The Collector the Plodex are the most violent and dangerous in the galaxy. Their entire planet was war-torn. The species was destroying itself. One day, a visionary stepped forth who suggested that the Plodex no longer wage war on each other, rather, that they take their war to the stars. The Plodex continued to develop and hone their art of war, until they became capable of space flight. They spread from planet to planet killing and dominating. They became impatient with domination, so they discovered a better form of expansion - imprinting their DNA into eggs.

They sent ships across the galaxy, searching out planets in the early stages of development. Once the ship landed in the most inhospitable location available on the planet, it would send out a hypnotic signal to summon one of each life form on the planet. The life form that arrived first at the ship would be quickly dissected, its genetic code implanted on millions of egg-pairs. The egg-pairs would then be ejected across the world to find their mate and begin conquest.

When the eggs came in contact with a planet's sentient species, they would form a Plodex hybrid that could quickly adapt to the conditions of the planet and dominate it. The method was successful, too successful in fact, as the hybrids eventually made their way back to the Plodex homeworld, and lead to its destruction. Piece by piece, the Plodex's own nature crumbled their empire.

The Plodex ship for Earth went wrong. It crash-landed in Earth's North polar ice cap, destroying 98% of the eggs as they were ejected without genetic imprinting. The ship sent out the hypnotic signal, attracting many different species. The only one who made it however, was the man who would come to be known as The Master of the World. Only one egg-pair is known to have survived. One of those eggs hatched as the Alphan Marrina whose egg was found by a Newfoundland fisherman. That lone Plodi was given a human genetic imprint when the fisherman's wife broke the egg. The second egg, Marrina's mate, hatched on its own and dissected any being it could capture.

It was later revealed that the Collector has collected one of each of the different species of Plodex and attempted to gain control of Marrina as well, though he did not succeed thanks to Spider Man, Puck, Sasquatch, Northstar and Aurora. The Collector also suggested that many of the Plodex were now extinct.

Recently, while investigating activities on the lost Plodex ship, most of the members of Alpha Flight were captured by the ship's automated defense systems. Sasquatch escaped the ship and formed a strike force to free his teammates. From an unknown source, the ship had been holding thousands of eggs without a genetic imprint. The ship attempted to use Alpha Flight's members as a genetic source to hatch the eggs and destroy humanity. Sasquatch's strike force managed to free the Alphans before too much damage was done. While hooked into the ship's systems, Alpha Flight experienced several thousand years of the Plodex's history, and "bonded" with them. They learned that over the past thousand years, the Plodex home world had repaired itself. Feeling the race deserved one more chance, the original Alpha Flight members (Consisting of Guardian, Vindicator, Snowbird, Puck, Earth Mover and Shaman) loaded the Plodex eggs onto a smaller spacecraft to take them home. During this time, new Alpha Flight member Nemesis found a young Plodex child named Mar, whom the newly formed Alpha Flight kept with them on Earth.
